ALP, Sedat

Archeologist (b. 1913, Karaferye / Thessalonica / Greece). On passing the government exam in 1932, he studied Ancient History, Hittitology and Sumerology in Germany. He received his doctorate at Berlin University in 1940 and started to work as a Hittitology assistant at Ankara University, Faculty of Language, History and Geography in 1941. He became a professor of Hittitology (1949) and a distinguished professor of Hittitology (1958). He was the dean of Ankara University, Faculty of Language, History and Geography between 1956 and 1958. He gave courses abroad as a guest professor at the universities of London (1959), Berlin (1969), Marburg (1978), Munich (1979) and Mainz (1981). He was the chairman of the First and Second International Hittitology Congresses (1990, 1996).

Sedat Alp made many discoveries and innovations in various areas of archeology. His many works on Hittitology have been published in various languages. He was the head of the Konya Karahöyük excavations from 1953. He became a member of Turkish Historical Society in 1946; worked in various posts at this institution between 1982 and 1983 and he was the last chairman of the institution before it was closed.

He received the Italian President Commendatore Medal (1957), the Merit Award of the President of the Federal German Republic (1972), the medal of Paris College de France (1980), the Star Merit Award of the President of the Federal German Republic (1991), the Grand Ufficiale Award of the Italian President (1991). He won the Promotion of Turkey Foundation Award in 1992.
