Arif Bedii Kaptan (1906-1979)

Kaptan was born in 1906 in Istanbul. He graduated from the Naval Military College, and then worked with Nazmi Ziya and Ali Çelebi for a long time. On leaving the military in 1974, he went to Paris. He continued his painting studies at the Andre Lohote studio until 1949. After returning to Türkiye, he began studying contemporary art.

Arif Kaptan donated works to the Galatasaray, Group D, State Painting and Sculpture Exhibitions and participated in a number of joint exhibitions, proving himself both at home and abroad. Arif Kaptan was one of those artists sent to various regions of Türkiye by the Folk Institutions General Directorate in 1940. He painted excellent landscapes in Kastamonu, where he was first sent to. The artist won many prizes in competitions and is widely respected today. He passed away in 1979.
